Why I Use Ubuntu for My Linux Setup
#Linux + Open Source#Ubuntu#Operating Systems
Image Credit: Michael Schaecher I’ve been using Linux for more then a decade now, and over the years, I’ve experimented with various distributions (including Arch). Doing this allowed me to understand what I truly value in an operating system. When I first got into Linux, Ubuntu could be installed as an app for Windows, but in order to get it to working properly one had to change the filesystem from case insensitive to case sensitive with a registry hack. After about a couple months I decided to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7. This was a time that not everything worked (WiFi drivers were a pain to get working), but I was determined to make it work So I ran an Ethernet cable from my router to computer.

Stop Recommending the Best Distro to New Users, Please
Every since the Steam Deck launched, I’ve seen a resurgence of people asking what the best Linux distro for me? And for some reason people seem to think that they have the authority to recommend what the best distro is for new users. The reality is that no seasoned Linux user can truly know what the best distro is for a new user. The true is that most of us got into Linux when not everything worked out of the box or polished. We had to tinker, troubleshoot, and learn a lot about how Linux works to get things working the way we wanted. And the true about what we went through was not what we where looking for at the time. We wanted a system that just worked, but for some reason stuck with anyways and learned along the way. In general that is not what most people want in the first place.

Did I think about upgrading my setup? Yes, but I would talk myself out of it thinking that it would not make work flow any better. I was wrong, it only took 3 years to realize that.

Image: JLab Mechanical Keyboard - Image Credit: Michael Schaecher * Being a part-time tech enthusiast and a full-time poor working man, I often find myself torn between wanting the latest gadgets and sticking to a budget. This comes into sharp when I came to enhancing my home work space: I offend find myself buying off-brand or budget versions of popular tech products. In most cases this works out fine, but sometimes you get what you pay for especially when it comes to the fly by night companies that pop up on Amazon or eBay.

Why Most Times Newer Is Not Always Better
Keeping Up with the Joneses in Tech The phase “Keeping up with the Joneses” is often used to describe the social pressure to match one’s neighbors in terms of material possessions and lifestyle. To Many Desktop Environment to Choose From
The Choice/Customization Doesn’t Sale Linux has a desktop environment problem and that is there are too many to choose from with even more configurations to choose from. This can be overwhelming for new users who are trying to find the right desktop environment for their needs. And to be honest, it can be overwhelming for experienced users as well. So why is the big push for using Linux as a desktop operating system all about the choices and customization? If this is not why most people that switch to Linux in the first place. Case in point the majority of users don’t even change the default settings of their desktop environment. They just use it as is.
